A clean PDF is the starting point. Specialist finishes also need named vector masks that show exactly what will print, foil, impress, raise, cut or coat.
Artwork Specifications
Use the right route.

FINAL SIZE
Build the document at the finished trim size.
1.5 MM BLEED
Extend printed backgrounds beyond every trimmed edge.
2.5 MM SAFE AREA
Keep essential names and marks inside the trim.
MASTER FILE
PDF is preferred.
Supply a press-ready PDF at final size. Use CMYK for process colour and identify required Pantone colours by their full names. Raster images should normally be 300 ppi at final printed size. Convert fonts to outlines or embed them correctly.
Adobe Illustrator or InDesign source files can help when production elements need adjustment. Layered Photoshop artwork may be useful for images, but foil, relief, cutting and UV masks should be supplied as clean vectors.
SPECIALIST FINISHES
One named layer for every operation.
- Hot foil: solid vector shapes on a layer named by foil colour.
- Letterpress: each ink colour and blind impression separated.
- Embossing or debossing: solid vector relief artwork, separate from print and foil.
- Spot UV or 3D UV: a dedicated vector mask aligned to the printed artwork.
- Cutting: a closed vector path on a non-printing cutting layer.
- Painted edges: specify the target colour separately; do not add it as page bleed.
BEFORE UPLOAD
Check the physical constraints.
Fine lines, small reversed type and tight gaps can behave differently in foil, letterpress, relief and raised UV. Avoid placing critical effects directly on the trim unless the production review confirms it. Show both sides together when impressions or layered construction could interact.
File acceptance is a technical check, not a new proof of spelling, contact details or design intent. The person approving the artwork remains responsible for the content.
