THE DESIGN REQUIREMENT

Express a beekeeping identity without adding another printed colour.

The card needed a recognisable relationship to Melinikon’s work in bee products, while remaining restrained on a deep black surface. The glossy gold mark supplies the immediate contrast. Around it, a blind honeycomb pattern carries the subject through structure rather than ink.

One idea, two readings

Gold foil identifies the brand at first glance. The unprinted honeycomb appears more gradually as the card moves through the light.

WHY THE PATTERN MATTERS

On black paper, blind impression is revealed by shadow.

A blind impression has no colour contrast of its own. Its visibility comes from highlights and shadows along the pressed edges—and those tonal differences are naturally subtle on black paper. A repeating honeycomb creates many small edges at different angles, giving light more opportunities to describe the depth.

Depth needs the right foundation

The 1.5 mm board gave the press enough substance for a pronounced impression. The final depth still depends on the die, the artwork, the paper and controlled press pressure; thickness supports the effect, but does not create it by itself.

PRODUCTION EXECUTION

Three pressure-based passes, aligned across two sides.

The identity was produced with glossy gold hot foil on both faces and a separate blind impression on one face. There is no ink and no lamination. Square trimming leaves the dyed-through black edge visible as part of the construction.

Recorded production

  • The last documented run was 500 cards.
  • The last documented production time was 7 working days after artwork approval.
  • The construction has also been produced in larger repeat runs.
