WHAT YOU ARE HOLDING

Two textures on one card: ink that stands up, and a pattern pressed in.

Run a thumb across the front and you meet both. The lettering is thermography: the ink is printed, dusted with resin and heated until it rises into a glossy, rounded relief. The pattern around it is blind embossing: the paper itself is shaped by a die, with no ink at all. Both sit on Curious Metallics, a 300 gsm pearlescent paper whose tone shifts as the card tilts.

Thermography. The raised, glossy lettering. The colour is the ink; the shine and the height come from the fused resin.

Blind embossing. The floral pattern is pressed into the paper and carries no ink, so it reads by light and shadow alone.

FRONT AND BACK

The back prints flat, and the embossing shows through.

The reverse is printed in the same single ink colour without the raised finish, so an address block or QR code stays crisp and easy to read. Where the front is embossed, the back shows the pattern as a soft reverse relief. We place the reverse text clear of it, or you can let the pattern frame it on purpose.

SEVEN PAPERS

Choose the paper by its light.

Every Curious Metallics colour carries a pearlescent coating, so each one moves between two tones as the card turns in the hand. Select a swatch here to set it in the order form above; the preview follows your choice.

Swatches are photographed under studio light. Treat the colour on your screen as a guide to the family, not a match.

HOW IT IS MADE

Printed, dusted, heated. Then pressed.

Resin powder being poured over a freshly printed black sheet in the workshop
The sheet is printed in one ink colour and, while the ink is still wet, covered in fine resin powder.
Excess resin powder falling from a printed sheet back into the tray
The excess is shaken off. Powder clings only where there is ink.
Printed sheet on the mesh conveyor of the thermography heating unit
The sheet passes through a heat tunnel. The resin melts and swells into a glossy relief.
Hand holding a black sheet of finished business cards with raised white lettering
The lettering now stands up from the surface. Blind embossing, if chosen, is pressed afterwards from a die.

Photographed in our workshop on a sample sheet of black paper. The process is the same on Curious Metallics.

DESIGNING FOR IT

What to know before you draw.

  1. Any ink colour; dark reads best on a metallic paper. The fused resin is glossy and opaque, so it covers the paper's shimmer wherever it sits. A dark ink becomes a crisp gloss relief against the pearl. A pale or metallic ink reads as shiny plastic rather than metal. Choose a colour that contrasts with the paper.
  2. The finest line sets the height. We choose the resin grade from the smallest detail in your artwork. A fine grade holds hairlines and small type and gives a low, sharp relief. A coarse grade gives a taller, rounded relief but fills fine lines. One grade per card, so keep hairlines out of anything you want heavily raised.
  3. Embossing as its own layer. Supply the pattern as a separate, clearly named vector layer or file. It can sit under the printed lettering, as in the photographs, or stand alone.
  4. Keep the back clear of the pattern. Reverse text that crosses the embossed area sits on a relief. Place it elsewhere, or make the pattern part of the back's design.
  5. One print-ready PDF per side, at final size, fonts outlined, front and reverse clearly identified. Upload when ordering or send the files later.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Can I skip the embossing?

Yes. Choose “No” for blind embossing and the card is the raised print alone, from €215 for 100 cards, flat on the back.

Can the back be left blank?

Yes. Printing on both sides is included, but the reverse can stay unprinted. If the front is embossed, the pattern will still show through on the back.

Does the raised ink have to be black?

No. Any ink colour can be raised. On a metallic paper a dark ink gives the clearest result; a pale or metallic ink loses the paper's shimmer under the glossy resin and reads as plastic.

Can I have a second ink colour?

The listed price covers one ink colour. A second colour is possible as a separate print run; ask for a quote and we confirm the cost before anything is made.

How durable is the raised finish?

The resin bonds to the ink and the paper and takes everyday handling in a wallet or card case. Keep the cards away from strong heat: the relief softens at the temperature used to make it, so never feed them through a laser printer.

Can I return them if I change my mind?

These cards are made to your specification, so the 14-day withdrawal right does not apply. That does not affect your rights if the cards arrive faulty, damaged or not as agreed — see delivery and returns.
